Women of WiN
Michelle Cormier
Company: NB Power
Michelle Cormier started with NB Power 14 years ago working in the Simulator group performing computer modeling. She decided to enter into the Control Room Operator (CRO) program, with intense studying, family commitments and ongoing support, she has been successful in becoming a certified CRO.
The CRO is in charge of day to day operation of the station by monitoring, responding to alarms and making sure everything is operating as it should be in a Nuclear Power Station. Michelle is indirectly responsible for all operational personnel in the plant by approving all work permitry and authorizing maintenance in plant systems. She finds the best part of her job is being challenged everyday with something different. She has a lot of variety and is always troubleshooting to find solutions.
Michelle was inspired during her work in the Simulator group watching the licensed operators in training. The amount of knowledge these people had about the station was amazing. Her most rewarding project was entering into the CRO program and receiving her license. This took four years and a lot of support from her family, friends and co-workers.
Michelle’s educational background also includes a Chemical Engineering degree from the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton in 1996. Her motivational message to young people would be “don’t let anybody make you believe you can’t do it, you have to try”.
Michelle believes that WiN is doing great work in the community and supports the need for networking events such as the Skills Canada Networking Dinners for Young Women.
