Women in Nuclear - WiN Canada

Amongst the many employees at the Bruce Power site in Tiverton Ontario, you will find Michelle Brough, an Electrician Apprentice. Previous to starting her career in 2006 at Bruce Power, Michelle was employed at Bell Mobility.

Michelle attended Georgian College for airport management and attained her commercial pilot license, then started her career at the Flight Centre in Barrie. The Flight Centre was experiencing some tribulations, and when they went bankrupt, Michelle was left working at a retail store. An apprenticeship program made it possible for Michelle to build her career as an Electrician Apprentice. Michelle attended Electrical trade school at Conestoga College in Kitchener, and has recently received her diploma. Michelle has been influenced greatly by her father and her brother, who both have had successful careers in the Electrical trade business. She takes gratification in the fact that what she has done will be seen by future generations. Michelle’s most rewarding project at Bruce Power was fibre optic fusion splicing for the control room. 

Focusing on electrical construction, her job as an Electrician Apprentice is highly diversified in variety and challenges. She finds her job very rewarding. Michelle feels that women have an ‘out of the box’ thinking style that can have a positive influence on the trades. Her words of wisdom? “Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something that you want to do.“  

Michelle was inspired to join WiN in 2006 because of the organizations active role to inspire young women into the trades. She has had the opportunity to speak on behalf of Bruce Power at the WiN conference in Ottawa and has also attended and represented WiN at Skills Canada Mentoring Seminars, which inform young women about the trades. She feels that through WiN, she can make a difference. Just as women who have gone before her, she can follow in their footsteps to encourage other young women. WiN has opened Michelle’s eyes as to what she has to offer, and what she can learn through other women who share the same passion for the trades.
