Women of WiN

Marilyn Lomax

Marilyn Lomax
Title: Chemical Maintainer
Company: NB Power

Marilyn has been with NB Power, Point Lepreau Generating Station since April 1989. She works as a Shift Chemical Maintainer in the Chemistry department and covers all areas of the station pertaining to chemistry. This includes water treatment plant, environmental, nuclear and conventional process systems. Marilyn monitors these systems by sampling and analyzing parameters to ensure chemistry specifications are within a certain range for optimal performance and operation. Marilyn is also a dedicated response team member where she has to pass rigorous physical testing every year to qualify.

Marilyn enjoys the independence of being on shift where she makes her own decisions, based on experience and knowledge gained through out the years. She mentions there is a lot of problem solving in an ever changing environment where she is always learning something new. These skills mirror her love of math and science.

Her educational background comes from a four year Bachelor of Science Degree at the University of Toronto. Marilyn also takes technical training through the chemistry departments continued training program. Marilyn’s past work experience includes University of New Brunswick in Fredericton in the Biology Department preparing labs for the nursing students and also farming projects in Ontario for the government.

Marilyn credits her mother as being her greatest mentor. Her mother’s quiet influence of wanting to be a doctor gave Marilyn the encouragement to do what ever you dream of. She would like to motivate young people to “research any interest you have and go for it, sometimes money can be an issue but there is always a way”.

Marilyn likes the idea of encouraging girls to enter into science and engineering so joining WiN was right up her alley. She enjoys meeting other women of the station while networking to discover what other women are doing in other areas of the station.
