Jenieveve Fredette
Company: Atomic Energy of Canada Limited
For Jenieveve, the nuclear industry has played a central role ever since she began her Bachelor’s degree in physics at the University of Guelph. Jenieveve spent co-op terms at Ontario Power Generation, Bruce Power and Atomic Energy of Canada Limited throughout the four years. When she graduated in 2004, her interest in nuclear science continued to blossom. She enrolled in a Masters of Engineering at Queen’s University, partnering with several industry leaders such as R.A. Holt and AECL. In 2006, before she had even completed her Masters, she began working in her current position as a research scientist at AECL. While riding the steep learning curve of her new position, Jenieveve finished her thesis and graduated in 2007.
She is currently working on a project for the newest CANDU reactor model, the ACR-1000. Her specialized research looks at the effects of hydrogen on zirconium pressure tubes. These tubes house the fuel bundles in the reactor.
So far, Jenieveve’s favourite part of her job is managing projects of various sizes. She loves the interaction with different people and learns a great deal from the people she works with. She acquires personal satisfaction from encouraging a positive attitude and environment in the workplace and believes a smile goes a long way.
Jenieveve credits her mom as having the most influence on her life. Her mom showed her that she could prevail no matter what was blocking her path and that even when life throws you a curve, what really matters is how you handle the situation.
Her motivational message to young girls would be to set goals and remember that even if you can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel, you have to believe it is there. One day you will see a glimmer and everything will work out how it should. Believe in yourself and your abilities and you WILL prevail.
Jenieveve was encouraged to join WiN by co-workers who were members. She enjoys being a part of a larger group with a very positive cause.
