Women of WiN
Cindy Sypher
Company: RCM Technologies Canada Corporation
Cindy has been an employee of RCM Technologies Canada Corporation for the past 15 years. As the Division Manager of RCM Technologies' Mississauga Technical Services Division, she is responsible for the overall management and supervision of three business units: Engineering Test Laboratory, Commercial Grade Dedication and Risk Management Engineering. Both the Engineering Test Laboratory and Commercial Grade Dedication departments service the nuclear industry. The Engineering Test Laboratory completes testing and qualification services on a large variety of power plant equipment meeting applicable industry requirements. The Commercial Grade Dedication Department offers component supply and commercial grade dedication services following the government guidelines.
Before starting at RCM, Cindy worked for the Heat Transfer and Ventilation Lab at GE Canada, as a co-op student, while attending university. She attended the University of Waterloo from where she holds two degrees; one as a Bachelor of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering and one as a Master of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering. Since then she has also obtained her Professional Engineer status and later her Consulting Engineer designation. Cindy credits her mother with instilling in her an incredible drive to pursue her educational and professional goals. She taught her to be ambitious and hard working and how to be successful, while being ethical.
Cindy completed her Master of Engineering Degree program as a part-time student. She highlights this as one of her most rewarding pursuits, which she completed while attending to her very busy career, as well as being a new working mother. Cindy takes great pride in being a part of the process that ensures public safety. Part of her work involves testing to ensure that nuclear safety related components will function under various accident scenarios.
Cindy joined WiN in February 2008 to network with other women in the nuclear industry and to learn about the other aspects of the industry. Since becoming a new member, her experience has mostly been from the recent 2008 WiN-Canada Conference in Ottawa. She enjoyed the opportunity to tour the AECL Chalk River facility, as well as the workshop with Catalyst Canada. The workshop provided some insightful information for women in the workplace. She was delighted by the chance to meet several women from the nuclear industry to exchange ideas and touch on some organizational strategies.
