NU Parliament Hill Day
NU Parliament Hill Day
November 01, 2011
'Putting a fresh face on the nuclear industry’ has long been a motto of WiN-Canada and never has that been more evident than at the NU Parliament Hill Day. WiNners and NAYGNers from all over the Canadian nuclear industry met in Ottawa on Oct. 24 and 25. After some excellent training on communicating your message, nuclear workers passionate about the industry they work in, converged on the hill to share their personal stories about working in the industry providing reassurance around safety, waste storage and the bright future of the nuclear industry.
“It was such a great opportunity for nuclear workers to share the good news about the industry in which we work,” said Cheryl Cottrill, Executive Director of Women in Nuclear (WiN) Canada.
The event was organized by the Canadian Nuclear Association (CNA) along with representatives from Women in Nuclear- Canada (WiN) and North America Young Generation Nuclear (NAYGN). Training was provided by the Christopher Leadership Group on how your message is delivered covering topics such as warm ups required to ensure a good presentation and being able to present an articulate message without the aid of “ums and uhs,” along with a session on media training by Judith Boyle, preparing the participants with all tools needed to speak to MPs, Senators and staffers about the great work being done in the Canadian nuclear industry.
The participants were all given a warm reception on the hill and Parliamentarians were anxious to hear more about the industry. Questions about safety, Fukushima, the recent AECL sale and waste storage were all addressed with confidence by the participants.
A reception hosted by Minister of Labour, The Honourable Lisa Raitt, followed the meetings with an opportunity for many MPs and other industry leaders to attend and chat with participants. All participants felt very privileged to have spent a day at our nation’s capital and to have been provided time on the calendars of our country’s leaders.
Talks are already underway to make this an annual event.
