NEWS RELEASE September 24, 2010 Canada’s “Women in Nuclear” Gather in Durham Region [Durham Region] – This week (Set. 30 and Oct. 1), 200 highly-skilled and professional women from Canada’s nuclear industry will gather in Durham Region for the 7th annual conference of “Women in Nuclear-Canada” (WiN-Canada).

Organized by the WiN-Durham Chapter, the two-day conference will include a series of lectures, workshops and networking opportunities aimed at “Learning from Each Other.”

WiN is a world-wide association of individuals, focusing on women, who work in various fields of nuclear energy and radiation applications. “The primary goal is to promote a better understanding of the benefits of nuclear and radiation technologies,” says Janet Donegan, President of WiN Durham and a manager at Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) Darlington Nuclear. “One way the organization does this is through active information and experience exchange, at events like the annual conference.”

Along with many experts from the nuclear industry, conference organizers are pleased to announce Dr. Roberta Bondar as its keynote speaker. Dr. Bondar, Canada’s first female astronaut, will share her experiences as an astronaut, physician, scientific researcher, photographer, and author.

Conference participants will also tour facilities of the WiN member organizations, including Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, Cameco and OPG.

OPG is proud to sponsor the conference, and in conjunction with WiN-Durham, welcomes participants to Durham Region, home of OPG’s Pickering and Darlington nuclear generating stations, which produce one-third of Ontario’s electricity.

About WiN Canada: WiN-Canada was formed in 2004 in support of the objectives of WiN-Global: to share factual information about the contribution and benefits of nuclear and radiation applications; and promote nuclear safety principles that ensure the protection of the public and environment.

WiN promotes career opportunities and interest in nuclear engineering, science, technology, the trades and other nuclear-related professions, especially among women and young people. For more information, visit us at www.wincanada.org
