GIRLS Science Camp GEMS 2010
GIRLS Science Camp GEMS 2010
July 20, 2010
Scientific magic tricks, mythbusters, global warming, kinesiology and fitness were tackled last week by 25 girls, aged 8-13, who participated in the GEMS/GIRLS Science Camp held by WiN-Bruce at the Bruce Power Visitors’ Centre.
Designed to keep young girls engaged, interested and involved in science, the camp more than delivered on its promise. The science of chocolate was a big hit, which of course involved much taste-testing. Another favourite theme was ‘Engineers Without Borders’ where the girls built working water filtration systems in a scenario that mimicked the social, political and economic realities of various countries around the world, from Canada to Malawi. Add in time for experiments, sports, crafts and inventions each day, and you have a recipe for one successful camp experience.
The camp was run by Rafia Waraich and Sudduf Wyne, two female engineers in the nuclear industry and the creators of GEMS (Girls, Engineering, Math, Science).
GIRLS Science Club runs regular programming throughout the year on PD days for girls in grades 4-7. If you’d like more information about these events or next year’s camp, contact Cheryl Cottrill at cheryl.cottrill@brucepower.com.
