Cameco Fuel Manufacturing in Port Hope manufactures nuclear fuel bundles for Candu reactors. We will start out with a small presentation on our facility and the processes. We will also review some safety protocol before entering the shop floor. The tour will consist of seeing the powder being received; this is the first step of the process. You will then see how the powder is turned into a pellet and loaded into the elements that make up a bundle. On the tour you will also see how the bundle is assembled and packed for shipping.
Tour of AECL Waste Management Project – Port Hope – Maximum 40 participants - Approximately 3 hours
The communities of Port Hope and Port Granby, located approximately 1 hour east of Toronto, have long dealt with the legacy of low-level radioactive waste, which was the byproduct of the refining of radium and uranium in Port Hope by the former Eldorado Nuclear Limited, a federal Crown Corporation. Since the 1970s, the Government of Canada has assumed responsibility for the cleanup of the historic low-level waste and in partnership with the Municipalities of Clarington and Port Hope, established the Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI) in 2001 to oversee these efforts.
During the visit to Port Hope, delegates will have an opportunity to meet with PHAI staff to learn about the history of the nuclear industry in the community and the PHAI’s plans to effectively remediate more than 1.2 million cubic meters of historic low-level waste and transport it to a soon-to-be constructed aboveground waste management facility near Port Hope. A tour of the communities will highlight current major waste storage facilities and provide an overview of the innovative solutions that the PHAI has developed that will help ensure that the cleanup effort leaves an honourable legacy for future generations.
