Geology Rocks! for the GIRLS Science Club by Linnea Catalan

Eighteen girls from Gr. 4-7 attended the WiN-Bruce GIRLS Science Club on Friday Feb. 5 to participate in the ‘Geology Rocks!’ program hosted by Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO). The girls had the rare opportunity to come on-site and visit NWMO’s Core Storage Facility for a hands-on lesson in rocks, minerals and fossils, as well as learning about the Deep Geological Repository.

Jim McLay (geophysicist), Dr. Jennifer McKelvie (environmental geologist) and Kelly Hirshorn (chemical engineering geologist) took the girls through the different careers involved in geology and then got down to tackling the finer points of rock and mineral characteristics.  The program was so well received; it wouldn’t be surprising if a few budding geologists (or at least rock collectors) were born.
