Glow worms and sticky slime served as table décor at the March break Camp GEMS (Girls Engineering Math Science) GIRLS (Girls in Real Life Science) Science Club on Thursday, March 17, when 25 girls ranging from grade four to seven were in attendance for the second day of the two-day program.

Campers learned about volcanos, earthquakes, germs, and glow in the dark science through a variety of crafts and experiments.

In the morning, campers were taught about volcanos and earthquakes through a short lecture and experiment. The campers created their own volcano using Styrofoam plates and cups, vinegar and baking soda.

In the afternoon, Camp GEMS instructors Rafia Waraich and Sudduf Wyne taught the campers about glow in the dark science. The girls were shown how many germs they had on their hands using glitter bug potion (glow in the dark hand cream) and a UV light. After the experiment, campers washed their hands and compared the amount of germs left over.

With campers intently watching, Waraich created glow in the dark worms using atomic worm activator and atomic worm goo. The campers took turns to hold a worm as it glowed under ultraviolet light. Glow in the dark experiments are aimed at teaching campers the science behind how certain materials (ie. Florescent materials) glow in the dark.

At the end of the day, each camper got their hands dirty creating their own slime using borox, white glue and a drop of food coloring.

Another fun day at GIRLS Science Club with Camp GEMS. Special thanks to Bruce Power, Women in Nuclear-Bruce for sponsorsing Camp GEMS to run the two-day program.
