GIRLS Science Camp 2009 Day 4

GIRLS Science Camp 2009 Day 4

August 13, 2009

The girls started their day working on their special projects.

After finishing up their projects learned how yeast best grows. As the yeast with added sugar grew, the carbon dioxide filled a balloon that we had sealed at the top of the bottle. Very cool!

We then learned that adding fresh pineapple or frozen fresh pineapple to jello does not make it set because of the active enzymes in the fresh fruit. Canned pineapple worked okay. Apparently kiwi has the same effect.

We also learned about how much acid there is in pop. Not much wonder our dentist suggests we limit drinking pop. Acid is bad for the teeth.

After lunch we talked about sharks and then we went outside to see a real (dead) shark. We got a good view of the inside of this small shark and we were able to feel its skin, organs and teeth. The shark was a big hit and lots of learning took place.

We finished the day with a game of shark jeopardy.

So much fun and learning in one day!
