This is the second in a series of blog posts looking at workplace trends and how you can best position yourself for advancement. The trends have been identified by Catalyst
In order to prepare for your success you must have an understanding of what the future looks like in the workplace. Catalyst experts have identified six trends that will affect the workplace in the future. Last week we looked at The Growing Talent Shortage. We will explore each of these trends and provide you with information you can use to plan your future advancement in the workplace.
Trend 2 - Generation & and the Interaction of Four Generations in the Workplace
For the first time in our history we are about to experience four generations - Traditionalists, Baby Boomers, Generation X and Y working side by side in the workplace. As more companies build teams to work on projects it is possible that all four generations may be asked to work together. Building collaboration across the generations with different work values may be difficult for some. On the other hand it provides for a more diverse team, with diversity of thought and eliminates group think. This leads to better problem solving, promotes greater innovation and can result in improved performance.
Where does this leave you as a woman working in this changing world? How do you set yourself up to be successful with the generational blend?
- Don’t resort to stereotypes to differentiate between the different generations. Be aware of the differences and appreciate the strengths each generation brings to the table.
- Be a good communicator. Bridge the generation gaps by converting directives into questions. For example, “What do you think about the situation?” Be prepared to communicate the same message through a variety of means, on multiple levels.
- Foster a culture of respect for everyone’s ideas and opinions and different work styles.
- Support equality for everyone on the team. Be an advocate to help promote the strengths each member brings to the team.
As employers become more aware of the trends and the shifts that will have to take place for success, you will be better positioned to take advantage of this different work environment if you put these strategies into your everyday work life.
Next week we’ll explore the third trend: Operating in a 24/7 Business Culture.
