Why a Blog?

There may be a few of you out there who have no idea what a blog is or why WiN would chose to include one on their new website. A blog is simply a regularly updated collection of content, written in conversational tone - like you were writing in your diary, displayed in reverse chronological order, which provides a news or commentary on a particular topic. Our topic will explore women's issues in the workplace and talk about some of the amazing strategies women are putting in place to make a difference in their workplace.

The blog is one of the tools used in social media. According to Wikipedia social media describes the online tools and platforms that people use to share opinions, insights, experiences, and perspectives with each other. That is exactly what we hope our blog will do. We hope to harness collective intelligence, facilitate conversation, build a community and have you co-develop the content through your participation. This will all lead to better thought leadership.

The thing I love about social media is that it allows one person to make a difference. You truly are one voice to so many who very well may agree with you and support your particular idea or thoughtfully disagree. One person can now start a revolution. It allows us to connect by our passion of ideas and interests, rather than by geography. A blog builds connections and links between all of us.

The WiNfluence blog will be public so everyone can join in the conversation. We can all learn from one another and although my experiences in the legal and nuclear worlds may be quite different from another's experience in the manufacturing world, research shows us that we are facing many of the same issues.

The blog is not a home for complaints about our colleagues, but rather a place for men and women to visit to better understand some of the issues and differences in our approaches and how best to embrace those differences for everyone's benefit. We welcome comments from women and men around the world regardless of your location or vocation.

I am a very strong believer that awareness leads to understanding and understanding leads to change. So join in the conversation and influence change. We look forward to reading what you have to say!

Hi! I think the blog is a great idea. Can I suggest a topic? I just recently read an article posted on my company from the Globe and Mail. It discussed the willingness of nuclear companies to finance the project to build a 5 billion dollar reactor in New Brunswick. Can you blog about this concept about the merchant model? How is it financed by the companies (will they be digging into pensions!)? Does it involve a long-term plan that includes transfer of ownership to the utility? How is the money being made/recouped? Because the customers are now engineering companies, will they be driving the requirements as opposed to the utility that will operate it? I can see differences in design philosophy emerging as a result.

Thanks for your great comment. The focus of WiNfluence is to provide tips, advice and thought-provoking discussion exploring how women can expand their circle of influence to positively impact their careers and the broader opportunities for women in the workplace. The blog will explore women's issues in the workplace and talk about some of the amazing strategies women are putting in place to make a difference in their workplace. At this point we really want to maintain this focus on the blog.
