Canada is celebrating National Volunteer Week April 19-25 for all those who volunteer in their communities. The Government of Canada reported this week that it is estimated that 12 million volunteers give their time to 161,000 charitable organizations, which generates $112 billion a year for our Canadian economy.

To all those who volunteer their time for the betterment of any organization give yourself a big pat on the back. Imagine, especially in today’s economy, what would happen to organizations if they didn’t have people willing to share their skills and time.

Women in Nuclear (WiN)-Canada has been built on volunteers and in celebration of National Volunteer Week, I would like to thank the original organizing committee, the Board, past and present and our members who all give so freely of their time to make the organization work. Without their dedication WiN would not be making a value contribution to the industry.

As you go about your volunteer work think about how to position the good work you do on your resume. Often volunteer work is an opportunity to spread your wings, take on leadership roles and grow personally and professionally. Don’t forget to add that good work into your career planning. Leadership roles outside your organization are valuable and should not be forgotten.

Kudos to everyone who volunteers!
